HISTORY
The hospital was built in the period of 1943 to 1946 by the Government as a hotel accommodation for passengers travelling on the flying boats which passed through Foynes while en-route to America and Continental Europe.The building was designed by the Office of Public Works (OPW) Architect Desmond Fitzgerald at a cost of approximately £40,000. When Foynes ceased as an aviation port in the late 1940s the hotel was taken over by the Health Authority and run as a hospital. The property was closed in 2002 and has remained vacant since.
